335 recorded deaths in Fremont County during 2019

Fremont County Coroner Mark Stratmoen shared the 2019 year-end summary from his office yesterday, January 14th, at the Fremont County Commissioners’ meeting.

Stratmoen reports a total of 335 recorded deaths in Fremont County during 2019, and of those 151 (45%) were Coroner cases.

64 of the total Coroner cases in 2019 were “non-natural” manners of death, accident, homicide, suicide, and undetermined. The following is a breakdown of “non-natural” deaths provided by Stratmoen at the meeting. He also included the most recently available (2017) National Statistic Comparison from CDC-National Vital Statistics System.

39 accidental deaths in 2019:

  • 10 – motor-vehicle/traffic deaths, 8 – falls, 8 – drug and/or alcohol toxicity, 4 – fire, 3 – hypothermia, 3 – asphyxia, 2 – drownings, 1 – exsanguination
  • Approximately 2x the national average for our population.
  • There were 8 fewer accidental deaths in 2018.

 

17 suicides in 2019:

  • Approximately 3x the national average for our population.
  • There were 12 fewer suicides in 2018.

 

7 homicides in 2019:

  • 2 were vehicular homicides.
  • Approximately 3x the national average for our population.
  • There were 5 fewer homicides in 2018.

Motor-vehicle/traffic:

  • 12 deaths total – 10 were accidents and 2 were vehicular homicides (noted above in the manner of death breakdown).
  • 75% of the total involved alcohol and/or drugs.
  • Approximately 2.5x the national average for our population.
  • No 2018 numbers were provided.

 

Drugs and Alcohol:

  • 59 of the 151 Coroner cases were drug and alcohol related.
  • 40 of the 63 “non-natural” deaths were drug and alcohol related.
  • The #1 contributing factor in accidental deaths in Fremont County is drugs and/or alcohol.
  • Of all 59 drug and alcohol-related deaths, the primary substance of abuse in Fremont County remains alcohol (78%). Cannabis-related deaths are #2 at 14, methamphetamine is #3 with 11, and prescription drugs at 7.
  • Opiates only had 2 related deaths in 2019 compared to 10 in 2018.
  • Methamphetamine related deaths (11) in 2019 is the highest number since 15 deaths in 2005 (the year it was first tracked).
