In 2019, the Wyoming Indian boys and girls did something that’s never happened before. Both teams won a championship in the same year.
In 2020, they’ll have a chance to do it again.
The Lady Chiefs rolled into the championship game. They beat Southeast 56-19 Thursday and Moorcroft 51-24 on Friday. Wyoming Indian’s ladies out-scored Moorcorft in the second-half 34-8.
Wyoming Indian faces Pine Bluffs in the championship match at 5:00 p.m. Saturday. The two teams faced in the first week of the season at a tournament in Burns. Pine Bluffs won 38-35 in that December contest.
Wyoming Indian’s boys survived two close ballgames at state. They edged Pine Bluffs 72-68 on Thursday and survived Big Horn 63-61 Friday night. WIHS faces the 4th seed from the east, Sundance who has upset Rocky Mountain and Southeast so far. Sundance played in double overtime Friday.
The Chiefs tip off around 8:00 p.m. Saturday night.
Also representing Fremont County at state 1A basketball were the St. Stephens boys. The Eagles went 0-2 at state after losing to Kaycee 70-69 in overtime Friday. St. Stephens led by 14 to start the 4th quarter. Kaycee’s Jarrett Humble heaved a three from just inside half court at the buzzer to send the game to overtime. OT went back and forth, but ultimately the Bucakroos won.
The 1A boys championship game features Farson-Eden and Saratoga at 6:30 p.m. Saturday and the 1A girls championship is at 3:30 between Cokeville and Kaycee.
