The 2020 WHSAA Nordic Ski Championship wrapped up this weekend at the Pahaska Teepee Nordic Ski Area. The event was hosted by the Cody High School Nordic ski team which saw nearly 150 skiers take part. Many thanks to the dozens of volunteers who graciously spent numerous hours prior to and during the event ensuring the races ran smoothly and efficiently.
The girl’s competition kicked off Friday morning under beautiful conditions. The Friday event was a 5k Freestyle/Skate race. Jackson skiers Kate Brigham and Natalie O’Brien took 1st and 2nd places respectively and Kaylynn Sandall (Lander) and Abigail Whitman (Laramie) took 3rd and 4th. The Lander girls took 4 of the top 10 places tying with the Jackson team for most female team points on Friday.
The Jackson boys team skied away with the top three spots on Friday as Elijah Weenig, Mason Wheeler and Samuel Johnson were more than a minute ahead of the fourth and fifth place finishers from Lander. The top boy’s team on Friday was Jackson by a decisive margin.
The Saturday 10k Classic competition saw Weenig nearly half a minute ahead of Kaleb Simonson from Lander. The Jackson and Lander boy’s teams dominated the top ten finishers.
The Jackson girls took the top two spots Saturday with O’Brien taking 1st and Brigham taking 2nd. Whitman (Laramie) and Sandall (Lander) were less than a minute behind taking 3rd and 4th respectively. The Jackson girls took four of the top ten places nudging out the Lander girls for the top team honors on Saturday.
The Jackson boys and girls teams took the 1st place team honors while Lander took 2nd in both the girls and boys divisions.
While the season has concluded for many of the skiers, there are more than a dozen Wyoming Nordic skiers who will participate in the Junior National Ski Championships being held in Truckee, California in March.
