Lander-native now residing in New York City, Oakley Boycott, sat in complete silence from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm for three days last week in a Chelsea, Manhattan window. Her donation-based experience aptly named “SILENCE” raised over $600 for local nonprofit Not Our Native Daughters (NOND).

NOND is dedicated to educating and raising awareness about missing and murdered indigenous women and children. They were recently invited to be a representative on a float in the 2020 Tournament of Rose Parade and are currently raising money to attend.

The 36-hour performance art experience was the practice of simply being inspired by the work of Marina Abramović. She sat in one place for 12-hours each day — no eating, no bathroom breaks, no talking, no naps, just existing. “There were people from all walks of life, strangers off the street, people I knew, people I hadn’t seen in years that walked in and sat with me for as long as they needed,” Oakley shared.

Plans to bring this donation-based experience to Lander this coming summer are in the works. Nothing has been finalized yet.

Below are the FAQs Oakley provided for SILENCE:
