#rivertonbiz, brought to you by Grace Andrus with Edward Jones, shares the stories of the local movers and shakers of our Fremont County economy.

Building renovations are in progress at 832 West Main Street for a new independent, locally and veteran-owned pharmacy coming to Riverton. Pioneer Pharmacy owners Sommer and Michael Pedersen are planning a soft opening at the end of December 2019.

County 10 chatted with Sommer and got a sneak peek at the renovations in progress.

Sommer shared she has been a licensed pharmacist for over a decade and was the pharmacy manager at the Riverton Safeway before they closed. “I probably would have stayed there until I retired if they hadn’t shut down. It might have been the best thing that ever happened to me if this works out.”

Pioneer Pharmacy plans to accept most major insurances and they are a HealthMart Pharmacy so they offer competitive pricing on prescriptions.

Adult vaccines such as tetanus and flu will be administered onsite. However, Sommer noted they will be able to give children ages 7 and up flu shots as well.

Compounding medications for people and pets will also be available. Sommer explained, “Compounding is for people who have allergies and they can’t take regular medication or need a different dose that is not commercially available.”

They will carry Ortho Molecular Products (OMP). OMP are very high-quality vitamins and supplements that are only sold to healthcare professionals and not traditionally found at large retailers or health food stores.

More information on the services Pioneer Pharmacy will offer can be found here.

Sommer is currently getting setup with the VA Voucher Program. She explained, if there is a medication a veteran needs such as an antiobiotic and they can’t wait for it in the mail, it would be covered under the VA Voucher Program. Sommer also shared if there is something not on their formulary that they need there will be a special discount available.

Sommer will be the only pharmacist on staff and a pharmacy tech she worked with at Safeway for several years is on the Pioneer Pharmacy team as well.

A tidbit on the name:

Pioneer Pharmacy was the name of the first pharmacy in Riverton. This is a way to pay tribute to that and they are also “looking to the future of pharmacy to pioneer new services and improve the health of our community.”

Check out the Pioneer Pharmacy website for more information and updates on their opening. You can also find them on Facebook.

Sommer shared the before photos below and there are some photos of the renovations in progress from our tour.
