Our SageWest new Registered Nurse orientation program provides support to new/recent graduate transition into clinical practice by focusing on leadership, patient safety and interdisciplinary care and bridges the gap between school and practice. The orientation serves to help new nurses hone their critical thinking skills as well as evidence based decisions. They learn about policies, procedures and common problems new nurses have in their first year on the job. Having this program increases the new nurses’ competencies, helps reduce turnover, and improves patient care.
During the first few months of transition from school to practice each nurse was given a preceptor within their department who has spent 12 weeks with them as well as 12 weeks of classroom time. Having completed their preceptorship they are now practicing on their own. The new nurses will continue with mentors to help them through their first year of nursing practice and to support them in continually growing their clinical knowledge.
